At Abbeyfield Hoylake & West Kirby, we’re always thrilled when Tim and his Golden Retriever, Gwyl, come for a visit. As dedicated volunteers with Therapy Dogs Nationwide, their visits bring immense joy and comfort to our residents, lifting spirits and spreading smiles all around.
About Therapy Dogs Nationwide
Therapy Dogs Nationwide is a UK-based charity run entirely by volunteers. Their mission is to highlight the positive effects of animal-assisted therapy by visiting various facilities, including residential homes like ours. The organisation believes in the profound emotional and mental health benefits that therapy dogs can bring to those in need.

The Joy of Therapy Dog Visits
The visits from Tim and Gwyl have quickly become a highlight for our residents. They eagerly look forward to these special moments of connection, knowing that spending time with Gwyl will bring warmth and happiness. Even just petting a dog can spark fond memories, relieve stress, and provide a sense of companionship.
These visits also create opportunities for residents to reminisce about pets they’ve had in the past or share stories with others. Even those who are typically reserved often find themselves opening up, fostering a strong sense of community and togetherness.

Why Golden Retrievers Make Great Therapy Dogs
Golden Retrievers, like Gwyl, are widely known for being excellent therapy dogs. Their friendly, calm, and sociable nature makes them ideal companions in therapeutic settings. They are eager to please, and their problem-solving abilities further enhance their effectiveness in providing emotional support.
All therapy dogs undergo a thorough temperament evaluation to ensure they are suited for this type of work. Both the dogs and their handlers are fully registered with Therapy Dogs Nationwide and covered by necessary insurance for their visits. The charity relies on around 1,500 volunteers, all committed to making a meaningful difference in their communities.

A Sincere Thank You
We want to extend our deepest thanks to Tim, Gwyl, and Therapy Dogs Nationwide for their continued dedication to enhancing the lives of others. Their visits have a lasting impact on our residents, offering joy, comfort, and a deep sense of connection.
