At Abbeyfield Hoylake & West Kirby, we believe in the power of creativity to bring people together and our monthly Crafternoon sessions are the perfect example of that. This February, our residents gathered for an afternoon of sketching and drawing under the guidance of Celia, a wonderful artist who inspires confidence and creativity in everyone she teaches.
Armed with pencils, paper and plenty of enthusiasm, our residents took inspiration from a variety of reference images, including a striking zebra, a delicate long-tailed titmouse, majestic horses, serene trees and adorable dogs. With focused expressions and steady hands, each participant brought their own interpretation to life, creating truly impressive sketches.

Art with Purpose and Passion
Crafternoons aren’t just about making something beautiful; they offer a fantastic way for our residents to relax, express themselves and enjoy the benefits of creative activities. Research shows that engaging in art can improve cognitive function, boost mood and provide a sense of accomplishment—all of which align perfectly with our ethos of community-centric living and adaptable care. Whether residents are seasoned artists or picking up a pencil for the first time in years, everyone is encouraged to give it a go and enjoy the process.

A Space for Socialising and Self-Expression
Beyond the artwork itself, what makes our Crafternoon sessions so special is the sense of community they foster. There was plenty of chatter, laughter and encouragement as sketches took shape. Some residents shared fond memories of past artistic endeavours, while others discovered a newfound love for drawing. It’s moments like these that make Abbeyfield Hoylake & West Kirby a truly community-centric residential care home, where residents can explore hobbies old and new in a warm and welcoming environment.

The Importance of Engaging Activities in Residential Care
At our residential care home, we understand that well-being extends beyond physical health. That’s why we provide a rich programme of activities, including arts and crafts, to ensure residents can engage in meaningful pastimes. Whether it’s painting, sketching, knitting, or even pottery, creative activities play a crucial role in enhancing emotional and mental well-being.
For those who may be looking into respite care or replacement care, seeing these activities in action can be a reassurance that life at Abbeyfield Hoylake & West Kirby is filled with joy, friendship and opportunities to stay active in both body and mind.
